The UW Nikkei Alumni Association (UWNAA) has a rich history that spans many generations of Nikkei huskies. Established in 1922, the UWNAA is celebrating over 90 years of commitment and service to the Nikkei and University of Washington communities.
Since 1965, when the SYNKOA house was sold to the University of Washington, the UWNAA has given away over 224 scholarships amounting to over $314,000 to deserving University of Washington Nikkei students.
In addition to providing scholarships, the UWNAA played a pivital role in helping to organize and plan “The Long Journey Home: Honoring UW Nikkei Students of 1941-42.” On May 18, 2008, the University of Washington, presented honorary degrees to over 400 Nikkei students or surviving family members that were forced by the federal government to leave campus and report to internment camps during WWII.
